Despite earning the top spot in the their top 10 for August, the NPD Group has since revealed that Vigil Games’ Darksiders II sold only 247,000 units for the reporting period.
Speaking to GIBiz, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter stated “I think that the sales are below what they had hoped for. I presume it sold around 500,000 globally in the first two weeks (the NPD cutoff was Aug 25), so it’s probably over 1 million now, but my understanding is that breakeven is greater than 2 million units, so it’s not likely to get much higher than that. We should probably give it another month and see if it’s tracking better.”
Vigil Games stated before the game’s release that this was, for all intents and purposes, a make-or-break opportunity for them and that any further sequels would depend on the success of Darksiders 2.
THQ didn’t comment on the initial financial reports or the future or the franchise.
