Development
We interviewed Sebastian Reichert, creative producer of DeepSilver, and he had a lot of interesting things to say to us about the game.
“As the developer comes from a PC background we are confident that you will be pleased again! No extra HD packs planned yet and we don’t think they will be necessary,” he told us.
“In my opinion the zombie market is already saturated regarding bad zombie games! It’s not enough to write “zombie-something” on your box to sell it. So in that regards there is some kind of saturation. But as long as the zombie games bring something new to the table or do something existing better than before, there will be interest and people who play it!”
The game is not on the Wii U and developer Techland has revealed the reason why it is so. [reference]
Techland’s Alexander Toplansky said that, “One of the opportunities we had for Riptide was to continue the development of the engine, and really improve it and make a lot of refinements,” he told Digital Spy.
“The things that are required to bring something to a new platform, you need to either really get to be integrating it deep into the engine, or you’ve got to [do] a port. Neither one of those was a satisfactory outcome for us, so we decided to do what we got platform-wise and just make sure that we can deliver the best experience we can.”
Gameplay
The game is a standard first person game and is open world too. The game also contains new features, according to DeepSilver’s Sebastian Reichert.
“We added the element of water, which will be heavily influencing the gameplay through different aspects, be it dynamic weather, a new vehicle (the boat) and new quests,” he told us.
“A very important new gameplay element is also the hub defence gameplay that offers a whole new quest experience that was not available in Dead Island.”
Story
Reichert also revealed some story bits to us: “The story of Dead Island Riptide will be told with the same game mechanics as in its predecessor. The narration will pick up exactly where we have left our heroes the last time, in Dead Island. Just when they thought they were saved… they are proven wrong!”
“Over the course of the game we will also learn more about the backstory why this all happened and who’s behind it.
“From the feedback we received, what really represents the “Dead Island experience” are the “watercooler moments” about the player and his actions in coop play and the game world.”
Marketing
The special edition of the game will include, in Deep Silver’s words, “a pack of exclusive weapon mods (for more creative undead destruction!), a digital strategy map (for the best expert advice on how to own the approaching hordes!), and a unique character skin (looks good and helpful for recognition among the undead).” [reference]
Rigor Mortis collector’s edition for Dead Island: Riptide:
It’s also available in extremely limited quantities. It will be priced at $79.99. [reference]
“In the haunting, superb-quality Rigor Mortis Edition, Dead Island fans receive their very own zombie hula girl bobble figurine, a bloody zombie arm bottle opener magnet and a bungalow key with a branded wood keychain.
“In addition, the Rigor Mortis Edition will include a copy of the Dead Island Riptide Special Edition for console, packed with a treasure trove of extra DLC content and a helpful digital strategy map. All of this is embalmed in the ultimate Dead Island replica suitcase – the most iconic item from the original Dead Island.”
Pre order incentives:
Publisher Deep Silver has sent out word that those who pre-order their copy of Dead Island Riptide will receive “The Survivor Pack” and “Fashion Victim” pack free of charge. [reference]
