Dead Space 2 Remake is on the Shelf Due to First Game’s Lackluster Sales – Rumor

Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb says it was "in pre-production", but it's now on the shelf so the team can focus on Iron Man and Battlefield.

Yesterday, it was announced that Motive Studios would work on the Battlefield franchise. While the development of Marvel’s Iron Man continues, it’s also building a new team to focus purely on EA’s flagship first-person shooter franchise. Of course, this begged the question – what about the follow-up to the Dead Space remake launched last year?

Though not officially announced, it was thought to be in development following the first game’s positive critical response. According to Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb on the latest Game Mess Mornings podcast, a remake of Dead Space 2 was in the works, but not anymore.

“They were working on it. They were working on Dead Space 2…and they are no longer working on it. It is on the shelf because the first game had ‘lackluster sales’, is how it was phrased to me. So, if you were looking forward to a Dead Space 2, it’s bad news. It straight-up is just bad news. Does that mean it never happens?

“I don’t know if that’s the case, but as it stands right now, they were working on it. It was in the concepting phase, I believe…It was definitely in pre-production, and now that work has been put on the shelf. They are done with it, and this studio is now making Iron Man and Battlefield.”

It isn’t the first time an Electronic Arts studio put aside a project for the sake of Battlefield, as seen with Criterion and Battlefield 2042. It’s also leading future single-player content for the shooter series following the closure of Ridgeline Games last February.

As Grubb stated, this doesn’t mean the Dead Space 2 remake is never happening, but it won’t be anytime soon. Electronic Arts hasn’t announced any new Battlefield titles but it’s confirmed that Battlefield 2042 won’t receive new seasons. Perhaps an announcement is due soon, especially with rumors of the next title targeting an October 2025 release and Ripple Effect allegedly working on a free-to-play battle royale shooter.
