Despite all the material we’ve seen from the game so far, Death Stranding is still somewhat of an engima. While the game’s director, Hideo Kojima, has been peeling back layers, he’s done so slowly. Just a few months away from the game’s release and we still have little idea how it plays or what the central story is. Hopefully, soon we’ll get some clarification on the gameplay, but today we got the “Briefing” trailer which is the clearest look at the story we’ve seen so far.
The trailer was originally shown behind closed doors at Gamescom 2019, but has now been released clean to the public. While I can’t say it really “clears” up what the game is about, since there’s a lot of jargon and assumed knowledge that we don’t have context for, it’s definitely the cleanest look at the plot thus far.
In it we see Sam being briefed about the President’s plan to reunite a broken America through modules that she placed throughout the major cities before being kidnapped. She is also able to project herself in the room, or…something, despite being captive. A group of decentralized terrorists who are against this reuniting have done all they could to stop it, and Sam is seemingly the last hope.
Like I said, there’s still a lot of questions, but considering how the creator says he doesn’t even understand the game himself, you take what you can get. We’ll know more when Death Stranding releases on November 8th.
