Destiny, Bungie’s upcoming, highly anticipated online shooter, is coming up later this year, and in advance of that, they will be hosting a public beta this summer, CVG reports.

This came on the back of the news that Activision officially plans to release the game on September 9 this year on the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4.

“Together, we are bringing gamers an ambitious and innovative game which combines the intensity of great first-person action, with the character investment and social connections of an RPG in an immense connected universe. We believe the game is on track to deliver record pre-orders for a new franchise, a public beta is planned for summer and we expect to launch the game on September 9,” said Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg.

“We look forward to expanding this universe for years to come and you’ll see much more in the months ahead.”

He added that Activision was looking at nurturing Destiny into their next ‘billion dollar franchise’ (their previous franchises with this honor have been Guitar Hero, Call of Duty, and Skylanders), and that Activision is hard at work to ensure that Destiny will be the biggest new IP launch in history.

He also confirmed that PS3 and PS4 players will get to play the game’s beta first.
