It took Nintendo until 2012 with the Wii U to join the HD bandwagon, but when they finally did, their games looked stunning enough to almost justify the six year long additional wait that we all had to endure. After how stunningly pretty Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD looked, the newest game to emphasize Nintendo’s beautiful artstyle in glorious HD is Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.
Developed by Nintendo’s star developed Retro Studios (of Metroid Prime fame), Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is the fifth entry in the Donkey Kong Country series, following 2010’s Donkey Kong Country Returns (also developed by Retro Studios). It looks like it employs some ingenious platforming level design, and without the mandated gimmickry of the Wii controller holding it back, as well as the return of beloved series characters and David Weiss, the man behind the series’ iconic soundtrack, Tropical Freeze looks like it may just be the best Donkey Kong game yet.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze launches exclusively for the Wii U in February worldwide. Stay tuned for our coverage.
