Square Enix has published an update showing off the story, characters, and gameplay for its upcoming Nintendo Switch game Dragon Quest Treasures.

Dragon Quest Treasures will revolve around Erik and his sister Mia, who live on a Viking longship. One night, the duo encounters Porcus and Purrsula—a pair of otherworldly creatures—and are taken to the mysterious realm of Draconia.

Finding themselves in mysterious ruins, the pair find the Dragon Daggers, triggering a chain of events that sees them sucked into Draconia.

Draconia is a floating island full of monsters, treasures, and adventures. Erik and Mia have to make use of their Dragon Daggers and start looking for the mythical Dragonstones.

Square Enix has also revealed a few details about Dragon Quest Treasures’ characters.

  • Erik: An inquisitive and mysterious young man who lives on the Viking longship with his sister Mia.
  • Purrsula: Erik’s spirit guide, Purrsula looks like a cat and is Erik’s sidekick.
  • Mia: A determined and energetic young woman who lives on the longship with her brother Erik.
  • Porcus: Mia’s spirit guide, Porcus looks like a pig and accompanies Mia wherever she goes.

On the gameplay side of things, players will have to use monster abilities to hunt for treasure. Monsters will come to help you out in fights, and battle alongside Erik and Mia.

While exploring the lands of Draconia, players can use their Fortune Finder when their monsters start getting overexcited, triggering their Treasure Visions. Players will then see the location of the buried treasure through their monsters’ eyes.

Finding treasure won’t be a simple affair, however, and players will have to deal with rivals competing for treasure. Players can use the treasure to grow and develop their base, and become stronger treasure hunters. Treasures will also include legendary figures from the Dragon Quest franchise.

Dragon Quest Treasures is coming to Nintendo Switch on December 9.
