While A24’s live-action adaptation of Elden Ring was speculated to have a budget exceeding $100 million earlier this year, a new report courtesy of The Wall Street Journal has indicated that it actually cost the company around $200 million to produce. This figure is noteworthy, since it would make Elden Ring’s budget almost three times higher than Marty Supreme.
It is also worth noting that this would make the Elden Ring film adaptation the most expensive production that A24 has partaken in. The company is known for its low-budget films with an emphasis on giving auteur-style creators a chance and ensuring that each dollar is spent wisely. This has led movies released by A24 to essentially become cult classics, giving the company a reputation for producing low-budget critical darlings.
As for Elden Ring, the $200 million figure puts it squarely in line with major blockbuster films, like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Jurassic World Rebirth. The former is estimated to have cost $200 million to produce, while the latter reportedly had a budget of around $180 million. When it comes to A24’s own productions, Marty Supreme is believed to have cost $70 million to produce, making the Elden Ring film the most expensive production that A24 has worked on so far.
Back in April, details about the film’s cast had been revealed. The adaptation of Elden Ring will be headlined by Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus, Civil War, and Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery) and Ben Whishaw (Skyfall, Spectre, and No Time to Die), and will feature Nick Offerman (The Last of Us, Parks and Recreation) and Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy), among others.
While few details about the story of the Elden Ring film have been revealed, director Alex Garland is noted as being a massive fan of the game. In an interview, he has also spoken about the difficulties he faced in his attempts to take on Malenia, Blade of Miquella.
“It’s Malenia who’s the tough one. I’m now on my seventh playthrough of that game. I’ve leveled up, I’ve got lots of juice, and a cool sword, and stuff like that, and I just throw myself at them again, and again, and again, and again. That was the technique I learned with Dark Souls,” he said. “It’s not that you get better; it’s more like monkeys and typewriters. You just keep doing it, and eventually, one day they’re dead.”
Elden Ring is slated to hit theatres on March 3rd, 2028. Production seems to be moving ahead on schedule, with one report from July indicating that the principal photography had been wrapped up. This reveal came from a since-deleted Instagram post by a member of the movie’s art and props department.
“Dream job to end all dream jobs. 6 solid months of blood, sweat, and tears making the coolest stuff ever, working alongside the best of the best. Can’t share anything else for a very long time, but I couldn’t be more proud of what we did. See you in the Lands Between on March 3rd, 2028!”
