Elder Scrolls 6: 10 Improvements We Want To See

Proper horse combat

The inclusion of horses in Oblivion and Skyrim always piqued my interest, but it seems like a missed opportunity in both games. When compared to the combat power offered by horses in other open world games like the Mount and Blade series, the inclusion of steeds in the Elder Scrolls seems like a real let down. Let’s hope we see a change to this in TES (The Elder Scrolls) 6.

More varied non-scripted events

The use of non-scripted events in Skyrim is generally fantastic, and it’s one of the key elements that makes Skyrim’s world so damn engrossing. What bothered me though was the inclusion of dragon battles, mainly because they had so much potential that wasn’t realised. Dragons are some of the most awesome creatures in the fantasy genre and, whilst they were cool to begin with, their repetitive attack patterns soon became very apparent. At least if they had put slightly altered attack patterns in it may have kept this particular enemy type that little bit fresher for longer. It’s unlikely Bethesda will focus on dragons in the same way in TES6 but, if they decide to use such non-scripted enemy types again, they should make sure they won’t begin to grate on player’s after a while.

More satisfying melee combat

Many players of Skyrim will opt for the classic medieval combat systems of swords and shields. This puts Skyrim in a difficult situation though as, for all the good it does in other areas, its combat is a bit lacking. Simplicity is usually a good thing, but future Elder Scrolls games need to offer a hidden depth and level of strategy in order to make this accessibility appealing. Though the Elder Scrolls games are RPG titles and not action games, their combat needs to improve in order to compete with other great RPGs such as the recent Dark Souls; a game with exceptionally satisfying hand to hand combat.

No broken quests

I mentioned glitches earlier, but some of the broken quest lines in Skyrim are a whole different (and more noticeable) kettle of fish. The odd texture glitch and broken animation is acceptable, but I was completely locked out of the Thieves Guild quest line during one of my playthroughs due to a disappearing quest giver. That kind of thing is pretty bang out in a modern release, and shouldn’t be repeated in future by Bethesda.
