Former Square Enix chief of technology Julien Merceron has joined forces with Konami, reports Eurogamer.

Merceron will be based in Konami’s European headquarters, and will be charged with leading Konami’s ‘efforts in digital entertainment.’ In addition, he will also be tasked with leading development on Konami’s new in house Fox Engine (that powers the upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain in addition to the just released Pro Evolution Soccer 2014), and lead Konami’s game program development technology development.

Prior to working at Konami, Merceron was known for his work on the Crystal Dynamics engine at Square Enix’s Eidos’ Crystal Dynamics developer, the outfit behind the Tomb Raider series, so his technical expertise, at least, is well assured.

It will be interesting to see what Merceron brings to Konami; his primarily western mindset towards game engine and technology development should be refreshing to Konami’s chiefly Japanese mindset.

Stay tuned for more.
