NovaCrystallis has posted the results of a poll that asked Japan’s Final Fantasy fans to chime in with their top-ranked female Final Fantasy character. Their previous poll, centered on the favourite male character of the franchise, featured Final Fantasy VII’s Zack winning out.

This poll was culled from 46 character names posted by fans. The results of the top 5 are:

1. Lightning (FFXIII)
2. Aerith (FFVII)
3. Yuna (FFX)
4. Tifa (FFVII)
5. Celes (FFVI)

It’s a little shocking to see Lightning top out against franchise favourites like Aerith and Tifa, especially considering her role in the most dubious of Final Fantasy games, FFXIII. However, apparently Yuna and Aerith were fighting for the lead from the beginning, with Lightning just barely nudging out Aerith for the win.

Other well-known characters made the cut, including Rinoa (FFVIII) at number 10, Selphie (FFVII) at number 12, Rikku (FFX) at number 13 and Yuffie (FFVII) at number 14.

At least we now know that some people will be looking forward to Lightning’s return in Lightning Returns: FFXIII when it releases later this year for PS3 and Xbox 360. Check out the latest trailer below.
