Final Fantasy 16 Doesn’t Have a Single Main Theme – Composer

Final Fantasy 16 composer Masayoshi Soken states that there are so many characers with their own themes that picking a single song as the title theme for the game is difficult.

In an interview with Game Informer, Square Enix’s Masayoshi Soken—composer for the upcoming Final Fantasy 16—speaks quite a bit about creating music for the game, as well as the difficulties in defining the main theme for Final Fantasy 16.

While games in the Final Fantasy franchise all tend to have iconic main theme, from the title track for Final Fantasy 14: Shadowbringers (also one of Soken’s works), to Final Fantasy 13‘s Promise, Soken states that it’s difficult to pin down a single song in the upcoming title’s soundtrack that can be defined as its main theme.

According to Soken, Final Fantasy 16 has an incredible amount of focus on all of its characters, as well as its Eikons and the relationships between the two, and to pick a single main theme would be to imply that the others weren’t as important. Instead, Soken states that Final Fantasy 16 has many different main themes in the game.

“The main theme for Final Fantasy 16 is actually something that’s kind of difficult to talk about because it’s difficult to pin down,” says Soken. “There isn’t really one song that you can call the main theme because Final Fantasy 16 is a game about all of these very important and very standout characters, as well as their Eikons, and the relationship between the Eikons and the characters and their dominants. We view these all as very, very important and we didn’t want to single out just one; we wanted to make them all […] equal in importance.

“So you could say that we have many different main themes in the game.”

It is worth noting that Square Enix has released song as part of the marketing for Final Fantasy 16—Tsuki Wo Miteita – Moongazing. The song was written and performed by Kenshi Yonezu. However, there’s no real indication whether the song is the main theme, or if it will even show up in the game.
