Final Fantasy 16 - The Rising Tide

Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida has said that, while there is the possibility of more DLC being made for the game, players shouldn’t expect more any time soon. Final Fantasy 16 is currently gearing up for the release of its second DLC, The Rising Tide. When asked if Square Enix was interested in releasing more DLC for the title, Yoshida, while not definitively shutting down the possibility, did say that it’s unlikely.

“That’s a difficult question,” said Yoshida to Game Informer when asked about whether the publisher had expressed interest in more DLC. “My honest answer is, ‘I don’t know at the moment,’ but at the same time, the possibility isn’t entirely zero. I don’t want to bar out any real possibilities at this time. The reason being is that we did spend a lot of effort […] and time creating this game […] and we put a lot of cutting edge technology into this game.”

Yoshida went on to talk about how the experience of developing Final Fantasy 16 was definitely an important one for the studio, since it led to developers learning quite a few things about developing a major single-player project before moving on to the next one. The studio itself, however, might be more interested in working on a new project rather than making more DLC for Final Fantasy 16.

“And because of that, we were able to gain a lot of experience, a lot of learnings, that we can possibly apply to our next project or title,” continues Yoshida. “So my honest feeling is that the team does want to take on a new challenge and move on to a different project – maybe it’s a completely new game, perhaps in a completely new form of entertainment. I feel like ultimately, that might be the best route for not just the players, but for us as well, too. But again, to reiterate, the possibility of more DLC content for Final Fantasy 16 is not zero.”

Final Fantasy 16 was released on PS5 back in 2023. Being developed by Square Enix’s Creative Business Unit 3, it is worth noting that the studio typically also has its hands full with MMORPG Final Fantasy 14, especially since that game is also getting an expansion this year with Dawntrail.

Final Fantasy 16: The Rising Tide was announced with a trailer back in December. The DLC will take players to Mysidia to take on the Eikon Leviathan.
