Final Fantasy 16 Sold Over 336,000 Units in Japan on Debut

Though not a weak launch by any means, Final Fantasy 16's Japanese launch figures are much lower than Final Fantasy 15 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

Final Fantasy 16

To no one’s surprise, Final Fantasy 16 has topped the weekly Japanese physical sales charts, as per data provided by Famitsu. With over 336,000 physical units sold upon launch, the action RPG has had a solid debut- though its sales are less than half of what both Final Fantasy 7 Remake (over 702,000 units) and Final Fantasy 15 (over 716,000 units) managed upon release.

The circumstances surrounding the game are different, of course, since it’s launched exclusively for the PS5. Final Fantasy 7 Remake was also a PS4 exclusive, but had a much larger install base of PS4 users to target, while Final Fantasy 15 launched as amultiplatform game, and also had a larger pool of users available at the time that it launched.

Square Enix recently announced that Final Fantasy 16 sold over 3 million units worldwide at launch.

Final Fantasy 16’s launch also brought about a slight boost in sales for the PS5 itself, though perhaps not to the level some would have expected, with the consoles jumping to over 85,000 units sold last week (up from over 51,000 units the week before). Funnily enough, however, the Nintendo Switch has seen a similar boost in sales, and with over 105,000 units sold last week, remains the highest-selling console in the charts.

You can check out the full hardware and physical software sales charts for the week ending June 25 below.
