Final Fantasy 16 is going to launch as a PS5 exclusive, but back when the game was revealed, there was some confusion about exactly how exclusive it would be. An initial version of the game’s reveal trailer mentioned a simultaneous PC launch as well, though Square Enix later went back on that, stating that the game was purely a PS5 exclusive, and that there were no details on other platforms to be shared at the time. As you’d expect, however, it seems that the PS5 exclusivity isn’t going to be all that permanent.

In a recently published ad by PlayStation Brazil that shows various third party console PS5 exclusives, Final Fantasy 16 is also featured. Interestingly enough, the fine script on the bottom of the screen towards the end of the video claims that the game is going to be exclusive to PS5 “for a limited time”, suggesting that more platforms will get the game down the line (spotted by GamesRadar).

Industry analyst Piers Harding-Rolls stated not long after Final Fantasy 16’s announcement that its would be a total PS5 exclusive for half a year after launch, and that the exclusivity end period would end entirely another six months later. Given how massive the series is and that fact that Final Fantasy has been a multiplatform franchise for some time now (with the exception of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, of course), it would be surprising if the upcoming sequel didn’t eventually wind up on other platforms as well.

Final Fantasy 16 doesn’t yet have a release date, but reports have suggested that it could launch sooner than most people think. Producer Naoki Yoshida has said that Square Enix won’t talk about the game until they feel ready to do so, though he has previously also promised “various announcements” for the game in 2021.
