In spite of being one of the most highly anticipated games of the decade and a remake of a universally beloved classic, Final Fantasy 7 Remake was facing some pretty challenging circumstances at launch, given the fact that it released in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic gripping the world and lockdowns being imposed across the globe. There had been signs early on that its physical sales would be affected, and during their recent quarterly financial briefing, Square Enix confirmed that to be the case.

The publisher has confirmed that due to disruptions faced with production, shipping, and distributions, Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s physical sales have been lower than expected. On the other hand, however, Square also says that that has led to sales being boosted in other ways, with digital sales growing “significantly” and “helping to bolster profitability.” Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s overall sales have, in fact, driven strong quarterly results for the Japanese company, with a 63.2% year-on-year increase in net sales and 241.4% increase in operating income.

By and large, Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s worldwide sales have been very impressive, to say the least. Within just three days of launch, the game had sold 3.5 million copies worldwide

Final Fantasy 7 Remake is available now on PS4.
