For the first time ever, a character with no previous history or association with Nintendo will be showing up in a Smash Bros. game- in today’s Nintendo Direct broadcast, Nintendo confirmed that Final Fantasy 7’s iconic protagonist Cloud Strife will be coming to Super Smash Bros. (as will a new stage that looks like it is based on Midgard).

Cloud Strife has never appeared on a Nintendo platform before- Final Fantasy was released exclusively for PlayStation, spurning the Nintendo 64, its subsequent ports and sequels have been PlayStation exclusive, and the upcoming remake seems to be exclusive to the PS4 as well… for now.

Strife seems to play quite a bit like other sword wielding characters in Smash, though no specifics are known right now. Presumably, we will learn more in the December video stream for Super Smash Bros. that Nintendo confirmed at the end of their Direct today.

Check out the trailer for Cloud in Smash below.
