There’s no doubting that Nioh is cut from the same cloth as From Software’s Soulsborne games, like so many games these days are, but Team Ninja’s megaton also manages to carve out an identity of its own. Its refusal to take itself seriously and present its outlandish story in fun and mischievous ways is a refreshing change of pace for the genre, and its fast-paced and challenging yet rewarding combat makes it an addictive and compelling adventure from start to finish. On top of that, Nioh boasts excellent level design, exhilarating boss battles, and a dizzying array of options, all of which comes together to make for what is perhaps one of the greatest games of the current console generation.
