Gears 5 has been active in marketing the game’s multiplayer, since a lot of new things and additions to older, classic multiplayer modes will come with the game. It’s campaign has, interestingly enough, been shown very little. While there’s been some teasing here and there, actual footage from it has been scarce. Well, whatever it is, it’s aiming to be more open than previous titles, and according to The Coalition’s Rod Fergusson there’s a lot taken from the best open world titles out there.
Speaking with GameSpot, Fergussion talks about the inspiration behind the campaign. He says that the game is not an open world game itself, but mentions several high profile titles that Gears 5 took from. There’s been hints that the game will be a much more open experience than previous titles, so it’s not too surprising. Thankfully, the team also had some people on who worked on those games to help get the idea where it needed to be.
“So there was just a lot that we had to go through to figure it out. And fortunately we had people from Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry, we had people who had previous lives that had been on those types of games. And we just knew that we weren’t trying to be another Red Dead or Far Cry or Ghost Recon. We were just saying, “How can we take Gears and make it feel more open and expansive without trying to go toe-to-toe with Ubisoft?” Because that’s not really what this game is. We just wanted to take inspiration from genres we love to give a bit more freedom and that idea of player choice.”
Gears 5 will release on September 10th, so we’re quite close to launch. Whether or not we’ll see more direct footage from the campaign or continue to go in mostly blind remains to be seen. Either way, sounds like the game is looking to mix up some things in a big way.
