On the heels of a lot of rumors and speculation, Google finally announced a gaming focused keynote earlier this week set for next month. At the time, there were a lot of questions about what exactly this keynote may reveal. Given the broad range of pies Google has its fingers in, it could be anything from a new API for Android mobile games, to a brand new gaming console, to the official launch of their new streaming service for games.
However, according to 9to5Google, Google plans to announce its long-rumored ‘Yeti’ hardware at the GDC event. This will be new gaming hardware from them that will come alongside their Project Stream service. Said hardware reportedly started as a client for streaming a la Chromecast, but has now evolved into a full blown gaming console with its own controller. Multiple studios have ported their games to it, including one game that is being described as “a historically popular game”.
If this rumor is true, then we are looking at the entry of a brand new company into the gaming console sphere for first time in 19 years, since Microsoft announced their own entry with the Xbox. Things are about to get exciting, if so.
