New previews dropped recently for WB Games Montreal’s Gotham Knights, offering up some new details on co-op. As Game Informer notes, each player can set their difficulty when playing co-op. Those craving a challenge can play Hard while their friends can stick to the Normal experience. Players also won’t be tethered together during co-op, allowing them to take on different missions in different parts of Gotham as they see fit.
Also, while it was previously confirmed that each character had cutscene variations, you can experience the entire story in one playthrough. Narrative director Ann Lemay said, “You can get the whole story from a single playthrough. But if you want to get the nuances we’ve done for each character, I strongly encourage you to do the playthroughs [at] different times. There’s a different flavor.”
We haven’t seen too many of the non-hostile NPCs roaming Gotham’s streets, but they’re there. As players progress, they’ll go from doubtful of the heroes’ abilities to grateful. “In the beginning, they don’t think you’re as good as the last superhero who defended the city, and they will tell you. And as you progress through the story, you gradually win over the citizens. You gain more confidence from the people around you. They’re happier with what you’re doing,” as per game director Geoff Ellenor. It’s like Marvel’s Spider-Man in a way.
The Belfry serves as the main base for the Bat Family, and it offers a lot of cutscenes. There are over 40 cutscenes in the hub alone, according to cinematic director Wilson Miu and they showcase a lot of the bonding between the characters. “There’s an underlying tension with them at the start of the game, but you’ll see that kind of drift off as they kind of find their spaces and their comfort zones around each other…
“I think we’ve managed to do something pretty awesome because that’s not something we’re used to seeing in a superhero game.” You can expect each character to have an equal number of cinematics for their arcs.
Gotham Knights is out on October 21st for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. Check out the latest screenshots below.
