Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Johann Pilestedt has revealed that Helldivers 2 will not be getting a transmog system. Pilestedt, who also works as creative director on Helldivers 2, took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to talk about why a transmog system doesn’t make sense for the game.

“We are not doing transmog,” said Pilstedt. “It doesn’t make sense – equipment looks different because it has different effects. Swapping one for the other is like having an apple that tastes like bacon or the other way around.”

For context, a transmog system would essentially allow players to change the look of their armour without changing their preferred armour effects. This means that, with the featurer, a player could opt for an armour that gives them more grenades, while still keeping the look of an armour they like better.

Helldivers 2 doesn’t allow for much in the way of cosmetic customisation outside of the player’s choice of armour, helm, and cloak. Out of these options, the armour is the only part that has gameplay effects, while the cloak and helm are purely cosmetic.

Helldivers 2 recently went live with its new Democratic Detonation Warbond, which brought with it new weapons, armours, cloaks, and other usable items. The game is available on PC and PS5, and recently topped the PlayStation Store charts for March.
