Hideki Kamiya Says Bayonetta Will “Probably” Continue Without Him

"But it seems like I may have to take the full saga to the grave with me," says Kamiya, who directed the original Bayonetta game.

Bayonetta 3

The gap between Bayonetta 2 and was a long one, but fans of PlatinumGames’ action franchise have nonetheless had plenty to dive into over the last year (including the spinoff Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon). But with series creator Hideki Kamiya – who directed the first game and supervised its sequels – having left PlatinumGames earlier this year, what does the future of the franchise look like?

Speaking in a recent video uploaded to his channel, in response to a question from a fan, Kamiya touched on the topic of the Bayonetta series, and said that though his vision for the 9-instalment saga is unlikely to now see the light of day, he expects the series to continue in his absence.

“I’ve talked about this in various interviews, that the Bayonetta series would consist of a total of nine episodes, and that I wanted to grow the franchise as the Bayonetta saga, but it seems like I may have to take the full saga to the grave with me,” Kamiya said. “It’s a shame. It’s not like I own the Bayonetta IP, but I suppose those who do will probably keep it going.”

Prior to his departure, last year, Kamiya spoke about his plans for the franchise, confirming that he had several sequels and spinoffs in mind that he intended to pitch to PlatinumGames. What direction the series will take in Kamiya’s absence remains to be seen, though series fans will be hoping that it’s not too long before we get some clarity on that front.
