Insomniac Chose Spider-Man Out of a Choice of Marvel Characters

Arguably the biggest release for PlayStation 4 this year will be Spider-Man, the open world action adventure game featuring the world’s most popular superhero that launches exclusively for Sony’s console later this year. The game is being developed by Insomniac Games, best known for their work on Spyro, Ratchet and Clank, and Resistance– Spider-Man feels like a natural extension of their talents.

Which is presumably why they actually picked the character as their choice of game. Insomniac CEO Ted Price told Kotaku‘s Jason Schreier that Sony and Marvel presented Insomniac with a pool of characters they could have selected from, and they ended up going with Spider-Man.

“Long story short: Sony came to us and asked if we wanted to work with Marvel. Sony and Marvel let us decide what character/universe we wanted to make a game based on. We chose Spider-Man,” he said.

Spider-Man was definitely a good choice- as stated above, it seems to be a natural extension of their style of gameplay and humor, plus the brand equity of the character makes the game far more marketable than, for example, a Quicksilver game might have been.
