Is Treyarch Working on Call of Duty: World at War II?

Call of Duty may be returning to the WW2 era.

Everybody loved Call of Duty: World at War. This was released right in the aftermath of 2007’s genre defining Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, back before Treyarch hit it big with Black Ops, back when they were still playing scrappy second to Infinity Ward. But there was something refreshing about World at War- it didn’t try to go bigger or more explosive than Modern Warfare, it didn’t try to become a summer blockbuster in the way that would increasingly go on to define the Call of Duty series in subsequent years. It just tried to give us the best possible game.

And, you know, now it might be returning- leaked cover art (of dubious origin) has cropped up online, which indicates that this might be Treyarch’s next Call of Duty game. It might not even be a return to WW2- maybe this is the long rumored World War I era Call of Duty. Or maybe it’s about a third World War in the near future. It’s hard to know.

Just like it’s hard to know if this is even real.
