Mario Kart 8 Sells 1.2 Million Units Worldwide in Opening Weekend

Mario Kart series also crosses 100 million lifetime sales.

Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U has managed to sell 1.2 million units since launching in Japan, Europe and North America. It hit this figure after only four days at retail from May 29th to June 1st.

Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata stated that “Such positive early feedback for Mario Kart 8 reinforces the great gameplay experiences that Wii U currently offers. With Nintendo set to showcase its future releases at E3 next week, this is a great milestone going into the summer season.”

Nintendo also revealed that the series has a whole has sold over 100 million units in its lifetime with Mario Kart DS (23.56 million) and Mario Kart Wii (35.53 million) selling the most since launch.

Even though Wii U sales are up by 666 percent in the UK following Mario Kart 8’s release, will it help turn the fledgling console’s fortunes around? Stay tuned in the following weeks to find out.
