Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Eidos Montreal’s action-adventure title, has achieved a new milestone. It crossed eight million players more than a year after its release for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC.
Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal CEO Phil Rogers revealed this in the Embracer Group’s Q2 2022/23 Interim Report, noting “great engagement from players with this title entering into Game Pass and PlayStation Plus quite recently.” He said: “I’ve actually just landed back from a few days in Montreal. There’s great pride in the team about the game they’ve made, and there’s also great excitement now about how we drive it commercially within our own business unit.”
Where it could potentially go next remains to be seen. Square Enix revealed last year that sales fell below expectations, and it was rumored to have lost $200 million on the title and Marvel’s Avengers. The development team had “no regrets” about its performance, with creative director Jean-Francois Dugas stating, “We did everything we could, but that’s the reality of the market.”
Disney’s approval will likely be necessary if a sequel is to be made. Then again, given how Marvel’s Avengers continues to receive support – with the Winter Soldier arriving on November 29th – it’s certainly possible.
