It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Marvel’s Spider-Man will get a sequel in the near future. Not only did the first game sell incredibly well, Sony also explicitly said when they purchased Insomniac Games that they plan on continuing to invest in the property.
A recent post on Reddit, interestingly enough, drops possible new details on the game (the post has been deleted, so credit to thegamepost for the details). Supposedly, Insomniac recently held an hour-long online meeting via Zoom that discussed the game, also showing cutscenes, missions, new mechanics, and more.
Take all of this with a grain of salt.
Narratively speaking, the game allegedly puts its main players in interesting positions. Peter Parker, apparently, has returned to work at Daily Bugle as a photographer, where, it seems, J Jonah Jameson has also come back after financial issues at his podcast. MJ is seemingly off somewhere else doing post-war interviews and will be returning soon.
Other cutscenes also apparently confirm the involvement of various other major characters, including the likes of Eddie Brock, Doctor Connors (Lizard), Miles (who is now playable), Harry Osborn (who’s Venom), Morbius, Carnage, Wraith, and more. The Venom symbiote was apparently used by Norman Osborn to cure Harry’s disease, teased in the first game, but things predictably did not go very well.
The leak also claims that the game features multiple dynamic weather types- 7 in total, with three in particular show during gameplay clips: light snow, heavy snow, and light rain, and Peter is shown walking through New York (as himself, interestingly enough) during winter time. The weather will change dynamically, and though the developers have tried to minimize the daytime transitions scripted into the story as much as possible, there’s still some of them in there. The game’s story takes place over a much longer period of time though, so there’s greater leeway in that area.
Side missions were also reportedly detailed in this meeting, with some new dynamic missions in particular detail, which are geared toward driving the “friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man” aspect much more. Balloon missions are back as a nod to the Spider-Man 2 game. More interesting, though, are missions that see construction workers falling of ledges and needing to be rescued, Spider-Man rescuing people from burning buildings, or having to take people to hospitals.
Some side missions also seem to have much greater narrative focus. Fights against Mysterio at the Statue of Liberty (which now seems to be a traversable location) and in a clocktower and theatre were allegedly shown. It’s also suggested that one side mission will feature Matt Murdock a.k.a. Daredevil as a character, while another might feature Human Torch.
Also, it seems the Black Suit – according to this alleged leak – is in the game. Players can apparently toggle the Black Suit with the simple press of a button, and seemingly takes inspiration from Web of Shadows. Additionally, it also seems like every suit in the game has its own version of the symbiote suit. The symbiote suit is said to have its own separate skill tree, and is more fluid in combat.
The leak also states that the meeting touched on DLC, for which the game will allegedly follow a similar pattern to the first game. Insomniac and Sony were reportedly planning on unveiling the game this summer, but their plans had to be pushed back due to the pandemic, and are now supposedly looking at an August reveal (though this, too, could be pushed back). They’re currently targeting a Holiday 2020 launch, supposedly.
It goes without saying that this should be taken with a massive grain of salt, as I mentioned earlier. Leaks from unverified sources always merit a certain level of skepticism, so don’t put too much stock into this one just yet. That said, another recent rumour indicated that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 might be out as early as 2021.
Meanwhile, another report recently emerged that suggested a Horizon: Zero Dawn 2 is also in development. Read more on that through here.
