Remedy Entertainment announced a year ago that it had started working on a combined remake of Max Payne 1 and 2, with the project set to be funded by Rockstar. Given the immense popularity of the IP, it was no surprise that the announcement was met with widespread enthusiasm, though updates on the project have been few and far between since then.

In Remedy’s recent quarterly fiscal report, however, CEO Tero Virtala provided an update on how development is progressing for a number of the studio’s ongoing projects, and confirmed that during the January-March quarter, Max Payne 1 and 2 Remake took a step forward and moved into the proof-of-concept stage.

“Max Payne 1 and 2 Remake has progressed well and during the first quarter the project moved into the proof-of-concept stage,” Virtala said. “The development team has worked efficiently in proving the key elements of what Max Payne is all about and in bringing the game in high quality to today’s consoles and PCs. We expect the project to keep advancing well and with that, the team size will expand gradually towards year-end.”

The project is, of course, still very much in the early stages of development, and given how much else Remedy has got going on in terms of upcoming titles, one would assume that Max Payne is still a ways off.

Alan Wake 2 has moved into the final stages of production and is due out later this year, while Remedy has also provided a development update on Control 2 and multiplayer spinoff Codename Condor, both of which are making progress in the proof-of-concept phase.
