All the way back in 2017, Atlus confirmed that Persona 3, 4, and 5 leads Katsura Hashino (director), Shigenori Soejima (artist), and Shoji Meguro (composer), had established new team within the company. Called Studio Zero, they have been working on a new fantasy RPG for a while, which was finally unveiled at long last at the recent Xbox Games Showcase as Metaphor: ReFantazio.
Following its announcement, director Katsura Hashino has shared a message with fans on Twitter via the official Atlus West account, promising “a fantasy experience unlike any other.”
“Taking on high fantasy will be a fresh new challenge for Atlus,” he said. “We’re excited to share our vision for the genre, crafting a fantasy experience unlike any other.”
Meanwhile, the game’s official Xbox Store page also reveals some brief details, confirming that it’ll be set in “an anguished kingdom stands on a precipice.” Players will “embark on a journey fraught with unsettling mystery, while overcoming obstacles and forging bonds with friends, and transforming those bonds into strength.”
New screenshots for the game have also been revealed, showcasing various characters, combat encounters, the menu screen, and more. Check them out below.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is due out sometime in 2024. It’s currently officially announced only for Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Game Pass, though it’s likely that an announcement for a PS5 version will follow imminently. Whether a Switch version follows suit remains to be seen.
