Microsoft is preparing for a massive onslaught next-gen by buying some key companies for Xbox. Okay, the onslaught is a bit of an exaggeration but the company they have bought specializes in media-streaming and space-age home automation technology.

It will ensure that the deal will give Microsoft a lot of patents of R2 Studios and they are said to be helpful for Microsoft’s Xbox division. (via WSJ)

The studio must have had some top secret technology and the report states that it does, however, we have no idea how much Microsoft paid for the entire deal. It looks to me like they must have paid a lot because when Microsoft goes after something they like, they get it.

It was reported that Google and Apple were also after the studio. It’s not clear what this technology would be used for, but considering the period when they bought it, maybe it’s for the next-gen Xbox?
