Out of nowhere, Microsoft chose to unveil their next console at The Games Awards this year. It was not what many were expecting, not just because of its surprise reveal, but because of how it looks. Dubbed the Series X, it’s mostly been talked about in that context, but the name is much simpler than that, and shows how the company has moved in a certain direction with their naming conventions.
A Microsoft representative clarified to Business Insider that the name of the system is not Xbox Series X, it’s simply Xbox. “The name we’re carrying forward to the next generation is simply Xbox,” the representative said. “And at The Game Awards you saw that name come to life through the Xbox Series X.”
The Series X is referenced more as a model name. Not only that they confirmed that it would leave open more editions of the console going forward. This pretty much confirms the idea that Microsoft is working on multiple versions of the next generation Xbox, which has been rumored for a good while.
“Similar to what fans have seen with previous generations, the name ‘Xbox Series X’ allows room for additional consoles in the future,” the Microsoft rep told Business Insider.
We should learn more about the next Xbox soon, at least by the time of E3 next year. Whether we’ll see other models or not by then, or they’ll focus on the Series X for the time being remains to be seen. We’ll keep you updated as more information comes out.
