Microsoft seems to have found itself on the wrong end of a hardware launch yet again, as its just launched Xbox One console seems to have been struck by hardware issues, sending warning bells through gamers’ collective memories, as they recall a certain red ring that afflicted the Xbox 360.

The new issue, while serious, does not seem to be as widespread, however. It appears to be a failure of the disc drive to read discs. However, Microsoft has confirmed that ‘only a small percentage of units seems to be affected.’

“The issue is affecting a very small number of Xbox One customers,” said Microsoft in a statement.

“We’re working directly with those affected to get a replacement console to them as soon as possible through our advance exchange programme.”

The Xbox One launched last Friday in thirteen countries, and sold over a million consoles worldwide. In fact, its sales in the UK look set to overtake the Wii U’s lifetime sales in that country already.
