Minecraft Has Now Sold 122 Million Copies Worldwide

The most successful game of all time.

Minecraft is the most successful and popular game in history- it may not feel like it in our AAA industry dominated bubble, but in the larger world, this is a game that, like Mario, has transcended the medium, and become a permanent part of pop culture. And now, it has crossed its latest major commercial milestone.

As revealed by the official Twitter account for the game, Minecraft has now sold a staggering 122 million copies worldwide, making it, by an definition, the highest selling game of all time (ahead of perennial sellers such as Tetris, Super Mario Bros., Wii Sports, and Grand Theft Auto 5). The game also has an active monthly player base of 55 million, which is more than many major consoles have sold through their entire lifetimes.

Undoubtedly, Minecraft is a behemoth. Its success is well deserved, too- this is a game that set out to do something very specific, and ended up doing it remarkably well. Minecraft is available on PC, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android devices.
