Microsoft’s foresight in securing an Xbox 360 edition of Minecraft before anyone else even got on that train is a decision that continues to reap more and more dividends- today, Microsoft announced that Minecraft on Xbox 360 had sold 12 million copies, which also probably makes it the highest selling Xbox live Arcade game of all time.
“I remember when we started talking about sales numbers that we would be super happy to sell 1m copies,” Mojang’s Daniel Kaplan said. “That would have put us on par with BF 1943 and Castle Crashers, which both are awesome games, so that was something to aim for.
“We never even dreamed of selling 12 million!”
This milestone is being celebrated with the release of the Candy Texture Pack, due to launch April 18. it is another addition to the title which sees ceaseless updates, with Title Update 14 having launched recently.
Minecraft has sold an additional 15 million on PC, 12 million on iOS and Android, and another million on the PlayStation 3. PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 versions are inbound soon.
