Mortal Kombat 1 Could Get More Content After Khaos Reigns, Director Suggests

"We were pretty sure when we launched Mortal Kombat 1 that we were going to be doing years of content, so this is year two," says series co-creator and director Ed Boon.

NetherRealm Studios and WB Games recently unveiled a hefty second year of upcoming DLC for Mortal Kombat 1, entailing a story expansion in the form of Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reignsas well as half a dozen new DLC characters to play as (not to mention Animalities). Interestingly enough, however, that might not be the extent of post-launch support for the fighting title.

Speaking recently with at San Diego Comic-Con (via Nintendo Life), series co-creator and director Ed Boon seemed to suggest that similar to Mortal Kombat 11 – which also saw the expanded re-release of Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate after receiving its own story expansion in Aftermath – Mortal Kombat 1 is set to receive multiple years of content, including potentially some that’ll arrive next year as well.

“We had Mortal Kombat 11, Aftermath, and then Ultimate, right – so we would keep adding characters, add story what not, so that’s kind of like the way we’re doing our games now,” Boon said. “We were pretty sure when we launched Mortal Kombat 1 that we were going to be doing years of content, so this is year two.”

Of course, this isn’t explicit confirmation by any means, but it wouldn’t surprise us to see support for Mortal Kombat 1 continuing beyond the upcoming, recently unveiled DLC- though one would imagine that it’ll be a while before we hear anything about that.

Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns launches on September 24 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
