Mortal Kombat 1 – Shang Tsung’s New Origin and More Revealed in Extensive Story Gameplay

The 17 minute gameplay video also showcases more of the relationship between Kung Lao and Raiden as they battle the Lin Kuei.

After revealing a new trailer for Mortal Kombat 1, which showcased Sindel and General Shao of Outworld, NetherRealm Studios has released several details and gameplay. It finally confirmed Invasions, a new mode with RPG mechanics and a board game-style map. We also get to see the first 17 minutes of Story Mode, courtesy of IGN. Check it out below, but beware of spoilers.

The footage showcases a snake oil salesman identified as Shang Tsung. After being discovered for selling fake cures, he’s punished by the villagers. However, later that night, a mysterious visitor (who could be Kronika) tells him that he’s meant for something more, conspired against by those who feared “how formidable” he could become.

Cut to Raiden and Kung Lao, farming in the fields of the New Era before venturing to Madame Bo’s teahouse. It’s assailed by the Lin Kuei, with the duo battling Smoke, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero. While friends, there’s a rivalry between the two heroes over their martial arts skills.

Mortal Kombat 1 launches on September 19th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Stay tuned for more details shortly.
