It recently emerged that Mortal Kombat and Injustice developer NetherRealm Studios had shut down its mobile team, laying off over 50 people, following which it was unclear what the future was going to look like for the many ongoing live service mobile titles the studio currently has under its belt. One of those has been confirmed to be shutting down.

Specifically, it’s Mortal Kombat: Onslaught that’s shutting down. The team-based action RPG spinoff launched last October for iOS and Android, but NetherRealm Studios has announced that the game will be taken off sale on both platforms starting today (July 22), with in-game microtransactions being available until August 23. Following that, on October 21, a little over a year on from the game’s release, it will be fully shut down, which means it will no longer remain playable either.

It’s unknown whether a similar fate awaits NetherRealm Studios’ other ongoing mobile titles – Mortal Kombat Mobile and Injustice 2 – though given all recent developments, it might seem foolish to be optimistic about their prospects. Stay tuned for more updates.
