Mortal Kombat 11 is well over three years old at this point, which means questions about what it is that NetherRealm Studios will put out as its next big project are being asked with greater frequency. The developer has generally alternated between new titles in the Injustice and Mortal Kombat franchise, but what can we expect from the studio next?

Well, it’ll be one of those two, unsurprisingly. While some may have been holding out hope that the developer will finally make that Marvel vs DC game that fans have been hoping for for a while, NetherRealm Studios boss Ed Boon recently confirmed in a Twitter AMA that the studio’s next game is going to be either Injustice 3 or Mortal Kombat 12.

In response to another question, Boon also suggested that more characters introduced in the Mortal Kombat series’ 3D era games will be getting much more attention “soon”- which might suggest that Mortal Kombat 12 is in the pipeline next for the developer.

Reports have claimed since last year that Mortal Kombat 12 will indeed be NetherRealm’s next big game, which has been mentioned in several other subsequent leaks and teases since then as well. Of course, it remains to be seen when WB Games will decide to reveal more details on that front in an official capacity. Perhaps with the upcoming The Game Awards? Here’s hoping.
