New Super Mario Bros. 2 has co-op campaign

During their Software Showcase for the 3DS yesterday, Nintendo revealed some pretty sweat new details for New Super Mario Bros. the upcoming 3DS platformer.

Just like it’s console twin, New Super Mario Bros. on the Wii, NSMB2 will have a co-op mode. Not like the DS, where it was half-assed. No, you’ll be able to pay the entire campaign with a friend co-operatively. It’s not been confirmed yet whether it’ll be local only or online too, but hey, we’ll take what we’ve got.

In the co-op mode, the screen will move along with the player that’s in the front on the 3D plane. The second player will have to keep with him. The leading player can either hold up and wait for the other player to catch up or just keep running, causing the other player to basically die, placing him/her in a sort of a bubble that moves along the screen.

They also detailed a new mode for the game called Coin Rush. Since the theme of NSMB2 is collecting tons of coins, this mode will have you doing speed runs of levels, with each set containing three levels, collecting as many coins as you can. At the end of each set, you will get a score adding all the coins and the time left you’ve got, and this will be posted to the leaderboards.

These scores will then be shared with other players via SpotPass and StreetPass, who can then try to beat these high scores.

The demo also debuted a new item to the Mario universe- the Golden Fireflower. Using this new item, players can hit bricks and enemies and turn them into gold. COINGASM!!!

Nintendo was obviously thinking of making a shitload of money when they made this game.
