Nintendo announces The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker remake for Wii U

Nintendo announced during the specially held Nintendo Direct for the Wii U that a remake for the Gamecube classic, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, which will be rendered in full HD, will be releasing for the Wii U this Fall.

Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma took the stage, so to speak, and while speaking about the new upcoming Zelda title, said that the team had started fiddling around with old games and rendering images of them in full HD, and Wind Waker really impressed them. And so it was that they decided to go ahead and remake it.

Nintendo has also promised that not only will Wind Waker on the Wii U have overhauled graphics, it will also have much improved gameplay. Oh, and what’s more, it will also have Miiverse integration.

This is excellent news. Wind Waker is one of the most loved Zelda games ever, and with the remake coming out this year itself, the Wii U’s library is certainly showing signs of getting strengthened.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said during the announcement that this is supposed to help ease the wait for the next full installment in the series, but it’s going to do more than just that.

The visuals themselves look excellent. The original Wind Waker looked great as it is, but now the cel shaded look is much more vibrant, with some really great lighting effects and completely HD visuals. If these are the first steps the Zelda franchise takes into the HD realm, they’re pretty damn good ones.

Nintendo released some screenshots during the reveal. Have a look:
