We just had a Nintendo Direct this morning that was filled with some great games and announcements, especially for Nintendo’s handheld; however, for fans of Nintendo’s bounty hunting Samus Aran, there was little respite, as even after all these years of incessant teasing of a new Metroid game (and then a flat out confirmation of a new game being in development last E3), we got nothing this time around too, leaving fans to wonder if they would now have to wait until E3 for a possible unveil.

Well… it turns out Nintendo may have accidentally leaked a new Metroid game. You see, when you visit Nintendo’s Official 3DS page, they list out games that you can play only on 3DS. They list out games like Super Smash Bros., Pokemon, Animal Crossing, and… Metroid.

Except there is no 3DS Metroid game. Not yet anyway. This probably means that a game is in development, and was probably intended to be announced some time soon, but the site may have jumped the gun and accidentally leaked it.

Even more interesting is that members on NeoGAF are reporting that the text has changed, which, if it is true, lends more credence to this theory.

If a new Metroid on Nintendo 3DS exists, then it will be the first release in the franchise in five years- a long hiatus, to be sure. Let’s hope it is worth it.
