Now that the Switch 2 is finally out, plenty of fans have been discovering new things about the consoles and its various accessories. One of the launch day accessories for the console – the Switch 2 GameCube controller – seemingly has a unique feature that Nintendo hadn’t previously confirmed: a gyroscope.

Nintendo fans have taken to social media platforms to talk about them discovering that the GameCube controller for the Switch 2 has gyro support, with many players trying the controller out with different games to figure out the controller’s limits. Among the social media posts, players have discovered that gyro aiming on the controller works with titles like Splatoon 3, Super Mario Galaxy, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

YouTube channel GVG has also posted an entire video where they played Metroid Prime Remastered on the Switch 2 with the new GameCube controller, showing off all the different control styles that are available in the title. Interestingly these are all titles that were originally released for the Switch and have featured gyro aiming support.

Nintendo had announced the new GameCube controller for the Switch 2 during its Direct back in April, where the company had also announced that GameCube games would be coming to the console as part of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription.

At launch, the service features The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Soul Calibur 2, and F-Zero GX. Nintendo has plans to bring more GameCube games to the service, including Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi’s Mansion, and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness.

When the GameCube controller for the Switch 2 was first announced, a statement by Nintendo had indicated that it would only be usable with GameCube games on the console. “The controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics,” said the company in its statement at the tail end of one of the controller’s ad videos.

Eventually, however, the company confirmed that the controller would work with most games. Nintendo did, however, warn that players might find some compatibility issues owing to the fact that the GameCube controller lacks some of the buttons present on the Joy-Con 2 controllers as well as the Switch 2 Pro Controller.

“The Nintendo GameCube controller is designed for use with the Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics collection of games and is an optional way to play those games,” said the company in its statement.

“Since it doesn’t have all the buttons and features found in other controllers that can be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 system, there may be some issues when playing other games. The Nintendo GameCube controller can only be used on Nintendo Switch 2 and is not compatible with Nintendo Switch.”

The Nintendo Switch 2 has been out for a day, along with a host of launch-day games like Mario Kart World, Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut and Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition. For more details about the console, check out our review. Here’s also everything you need to know about Switch 2 accessories.
