Rumours, leaks, and reports about a more powerful Switch variant have been doing the rounds for a long time now, but the past few months have seen multiple credible leaks pointing to a newer SKU for the system. Allegedly, Nintendo have been asking developers to make their games 4K-ready, have a bunch of new games lined up to go along with the new model, and the new model is due out some time in early 2021.
It seems, however, that at least where the timeline is concerned, those reports may not have been entirely accurate- either that, or plans have internally changed at Nintendo. As reported by Bloomberg, during the company’s recent quarterly Q&A session, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said that the company won’t be announcing any new Switch models anytime soon. Of course, the wording of that statement does leave the door open for announcements to come down the line, perhaps later in the year, but those who were hoping for a new, more powerful Switch model to come out in the immediate future should probably recalibrate their expectations.
Nintendo recently announced updated sales figures for a number of games, while also confirming that the Switch has now surpassed the lifetime sales of the 3DS, having sold a total of 79.87 million units worldwide as of the end of December.
