Ouya officially funded today, raising over £5.5m

After a rather high-profile record-breaking Kickstarter, the first part of the Ouya journey is finally over, the project officially funded with £5,501,039 ($8,596,475) from plegdes alone, completely destroying the original target of just over £600,000.

Over the course of 30 days, 63,416 backers pledged an average of £86 each, with over 45,000 consoles already paid for.

Hours before funding, CEO Julie Uhrman posted “It’s been a lot of work, and a wild 29-day ride, but we are so grateful for the support. Our first toast will be dedicated to you, the backers who made OUYA possible.

“We’ve got aggressive goals and we’re going to deliver. We’ll continue to push for the best content and coolest features we can bring to our little magic box. We’ll keep you apprised of the controller as it takes shape. And we’ll continue to listen to your requests, and answer your questions.

“We cannot emphasize enough how much your actions and attitudes have influenced us. You’ve taken our dreams and made them your own, and together we will make them real. With that, I tip my hat to you, our backers/founders/friends.”

The question now is can Ouya successfully launch on the same amount of money some games spend solely on marketing? Let’s hope so.
