Persona 5 Royal Sold Below Expectations, Sega Says

Other new releases like New Sakura Wars and Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 also underperformed.

Sega has released its financial results for the third quarter of fiscal year 2019-20, which ran from October to December, and the results were, by and large, pretty positive. Net sales and operating income were both up for them year-on-year. That said, many of their most major new releases during the quarter ended up selling below expectations.

Persona 5 Royal – which actually started off with solid sales in Japan – was one of their bigger releases of the quarter, but it ended up selling worse than expectations, Sega confirmed. Also selling below expectations were two of their other major releases, New Sakura Wars and Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. The fact that Persona 5 Royal and New Sakura Wars were both released only in Japan may have had something to do with slower sales. That said, given Persona 5 Royal’s status as an expanded re-release, it’s not all too surprising to see it selling below expectations.

Persona 5 Royal is due out for the PS4 in western markets on March 31. New Sakura Wars does not have an exact western release date, but Sega have previously said that they’re targeting a Q2 2020 launch for the game outside of Japan.
