Xbox consoles may have always received the cold shoulder from Japanese audience, but that wasn’t from lack of trying, especially as far as the Xbox 360 is concerned. That console, in particular, received some great exclusive JRPGs as a result of Microsoft aggressively courting developers in the region to (futilely) try and make their console more appealing to the market. These included Mistwalker’s Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon.
The Xbox One so far seems to be lacking in that kind of exclusive Japanese support (although it is getting Platinum Games’ Scalebound). However, Phil Spencer promised that JRPGs will be coming to the Xbox One soon, although they might not necessarily be from Mistwalker. This came in response to a question he was asked about exclusive JRPG support for Xbox One. His response was quite straightforward: “You will see JRPGs on Xbox One,” he said.
I certainly hope so- Japanese support for consoles in general seems to be dying, so if the three platform holders aggressively courting Japanese devs for exclusive content is one of the ways to keep Japanese console game development alive, then I am all for it.
