October-December of 2019 proved to be a very fruitful quarter for Nintendo, not only because of extremely impressive sales figures for the Switch, but also because of equally impressive numbers in terms of software sales, with a few titles in particular truly standing out. The ones that stood out the most, as most expected, were Pokemon Sword and Shield, which sold 16.06 million units in just a month and a half- which is insane even by Pokemon standards.
And Nintendo expects those numbers to only go higher. In their recent quarterly financial report, Nintendo confirmed that Pokemon Sword and Shield’s sales have outpaced those of Pokemon Sun and Moon, which previous held the record for fastest selling games in the series. More importantly though, Nintendo expects Sword and Shield to join the likes of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and others as Switch games that exhibit strong legs in sales for a prolonged period of time, with them saying that they “expect sales to continue as these become evergreen titles.”
