With the last mainline Professor Layton entry having launched nearly a decade ago, fans of the series have had to wait quite a long time to get their hands on a new instalment, though an end to that wait is finally in sight. Last month, Level-5 announced Professor Layton and the New World of Steam with a brief teaser trailer, and recently, at its Level-5 Vision 2023 event, the developer showcased another new trailer while revealing new story details.

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will, as you’d expect, star the titular archaeology professor once again, while his trusty sidekick and student Luke Triton will also be returning. The game is set a year after the events of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, the last entry in the series’ chronology, and will take players to a new setting in in Steam Bison, America.

As its name suggests, Steam Bison is very much a steampunk setting, true to the series’ general aesthetic, where highly advanced steam engines have “ushered in a new world”. A new mystery is afoot in Steam Bison, and though specific details on what it will entail are unclear, it will once again bring Professor Layton and Luke together on another new adventure. Check out the trailer below.

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is in development exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. Level-5 has also confirmed that the game will be out before the end of 2024. Check out more details on its official website.
