Developer Team Jade has unveiled its new title – Project Spectrum – with a trailer during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live event. The game will be a squad-based first-person shooter with a focus on asymmetric combat. Check out the trailer, which gives us a glimpse at not just the story, but some combat as well, below. Project Spectrum doesn’t yet have a release date.

As the trailer would indicate, Project Spectrum was announced earlier this month as Crossfire: Rainbow, and the new trailer’s combat involves a similar enemy to what was fought in the trailer released earlier. This time around, however, we also get more context for the upcoming title’s story, since the gameplay has been framed around a soldier getting debriefed after a mission that went horribly wrong.

“We are incredibly excited to show Project Spectrum to players worldwide, as we have been working in secret for two years,” said game director Basil Wang in a press release. “With this game, we wanted to create something truly unique: a meticulously crafted and uniquely styled shooter at its core, while presenting a dangerous yet captivating world — one where players embark on an unpredictable survival adventure. As they explore, they’ll encounter unexpected threats and may even become the danger themselves. Our journey has just begun, and we can’t wait to share more in the future.”

Project Spectrum is being developed using Unreal Engine 5, and is currently only planned for release on PC. Its story will revolve around a reality-warping force, Ember, that can transform everything it touches – both living and non-living – in strange and unknowable ways. These events leave behind Ember Zones, which are then investigated by an Operator, which players take the role of.

The studio has also confirmed that Project Spectrum will allow players to recruit teammates as they make their way through different Ember Zones, and in the process, get the strength needed to take down more challenging threats. While players will have to take on the Ember-based creatures, they will also have to keep an eye on their sanity.
